Marie Curie: Making the Episode

In reading, listening to audiobooks and researching Marie Curie, I did have a sense of realizing what an enormous topic I had undertaken. I wanted to make sure that I covered every aspect of her life, but she led an incredible life that I simply wouldn’t be able to cover in the amount of time I had slotted for myself.

My intention was to make episode about 45 minutes in length, but the reality is that I simply have too much to talk about, and even where I capped the episode (66 minutes), I still had to omit information. And while I am really happy with what I have done, I almost wish I had decided to make just my whole season about her! That being said, I am really excited that I have eleven more women to uncover and bring to you, my wonderful rebels.

This episode, and all the episodes that come after Marie Curie will have to be the broad strokes of each woman’s life, but ultimately I think that is okay. I want to give a taste of the whole story to hopefully inspire others to look further. And I hope that by providing my sources that there will be more for listeners to uncover.

Now I will tell you, I had a lot of anxiety leading up to the recording of this episode because I wanted to do it right! In a sense, I wanted to do Marie Curie proud, (though from my readings and other source material, I have the sense that she probably wouldn’t have appreciated it, she seemed a woman unwilling to be glorified). It is with this same attitude that I hope to approach each woman we meet this season.

The editing for this episode was immense, and I get more comfortable use the mic again, and honestly get better at formulating how I want each episode to sound, I think the edits will be less and less. But to put it in perspective (of what a good job I hope to do!) I had almost 90 segments to stitch together! Partially because I was looking at my notes and making sure I got the dates right, but also because there were certain interruptions from one very curious cat and one overly exuberant dog (and if you listen particularly closely you might even hear the pup outside barking at the neighbors)!

It was also important to me that in creating this podcast I also help to represent women in business, and it was exciting to be able to do my first Spotlight with the owner of one of my favorite coffee shops here in STL, Shameless Grounds. If you are from STL, or visiting anytime soon, make sure to pop in there for a coffee, one of their amazing sandwiches (seriously, the Black and Bleu *chef’s kiss* and the Chauvinist Pig is drool worthy), or visit them in the evening for cocktails and peruse their sex-positive library!

I would like to say a special shout out thank you to both Hannah Hull who did such an amazing job with the podcast art and cover at for the website, and DDare Bionic who created the music for this season.
