Wow, honestly, I felt like I was never going to get here.
Also, hi and hello if you are here too! I guess the real question is “where is here, exactly?” Well this is my website for my new podcast, Rebel Women, a podcast about ordinary women who’ve done the extraordinary. In laymen’s terms, this is a website/blog dedicated to telling the stories about women well known to history, lesser known, and sometimes virtually unknown.
I’ve nursed this idea for the better part of five years. It all began when I started listening to podcasts, specifically This Podcast Will Kill You(an excellent podcast for a science nerd like me!) and I said to my friend that if I ever did start a podcast that I would want to tell the stories of amazing women, and the idea stuck. I thought about it, chewed on the idea, and ultimately figured out how to produce the idea myself. So here we are, six months out from when I plan to release the first episode on International Women’s Day, March 8th of 2023.
While I don’t want to reveal too much about what this first season will look like, I will give some choice details. This first season is going to showcase twelve women from all different walks of life. One was the King of Egypt, (yeah, you read that right!) and another women was a double Nobel Prize Winner. One woman was a rebel fighter in South America helping to free her fellow people, while another woman was a celebrated writer with a complicated life story. I hope to accurately portray each woman’s life though careful research and utilizing multiple sources including (but not limited to) autobiographies, biographies, and documentaries. I will take the time to properly cite each source of information on each page that is dedicated to the women of each season and hopefully set up some links to local bookstores if fellow Rebels want to learn more.
I hope to let you guys know a little bit more about me on the blog. While I don’t want to take up too much time on the podcast talking about myself, I hope to give a little more insight about why I picked certain women, what I am thinking about during my research, and my thoughts about how I produce each episode. And maybe I will also explain some of the pitfalls in my research method. (I think I am going to discover that I don’t have a perfect process, since that is so often the case.)
Here is a little about me: I am freshly 30, have a ten year old cat that barely weighs 8lbs and is all love, and the goofiest 70lbs german shepherd mix. My educational background is in biology and (accidentally) physics, but my real passions are traveling (I’ve been to almost fifteen countries so far), hiking (the Grand Canyon was a trip of a lifetime but I’m planning on going to Peru for a fifty mile hike in June so I might be changing my tune), and eating (I have over ten food tours under my belt and I can’t wait to add more)! I have been an avid reader my whole life, and a sponge for learning as many weird and interesting facts as possible, which probably feeds a little into my desire to learn about all of these women.
I hope, as your blog host/podcast host, that I get the chance to bring you episodes that are both informative and also make you smile. Ultimately the stories I want to bring to you are ones that show that gender should never be a hinderance to what anyone can achieve. I hope that I am able to give each woman an amazing episode that shows the many facets of themselves, weaving in their accomplishments with the complicated lives that they have all lead.
I suppose now, we will wait and see if I am up to the task.
